What's the craziest photo with a backstory?
Harold Agnew, holding a tiny little box in his hand.
He smiles, as if it is any other day. And for Mr. Agnew, it is. He’s a physicist and the box contains the nuclear core to Fat Man, the bomb that would wipe out Nagasaki soon after. The bomb killed 40,000 people in an instant… tens of thousands more died in the months after of burns they sustained or acute radiation poisoning.
So much death, suffering and destruction all contained in one box small enough to carry in one hand. Harold Agnew never had any guilt for his part in creating the bomb, I should mention… he did not feel as if he did anything wrong. When pressed, he even went as far as to claim: “Believe me, we saved Japanese lives with those bombs — an invasion would have been much worse.”
In 2005, an elderly Harold Agnew gave a speech in Hiroshima where he met afterwards with bomb survivors. They demanded an apology for his role in creating the bomb. He shot them a fiery look and responded loudly: “Remember Pearl Harbor!”
